Last month, I did something a little unexpected. Besides helping folks navigate the best ways for Diversion, Rapid Resolution & Housing Problem Solving to adapt to service community (which is still very much my jam & focus!), I also became a licensed real estate agent ~
Now, you might be wondering, “Wait, what?” Well, the truth is, the idea came from some amazing folks I met during one of my training sessions. They stuck around afterwards and were telling me about how they moonlight in real estate. She explained that it helps her get connected to potential opportunities for her clients and work with landlords, potential landlords, and people exploring ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units). They also told me that their real estate knowledge was really useful in advocating for more affordable housing options and getting into networks and communities where they can help. So I thought…why not? Also – I’m a housing economist – I’m always tracking the market & paying attention to trends, let’s see what they know that I don’t.
Their stories got me thinking – what if there’s a way to bridge the gap between the housing advocacy world and the world of real estate? I know that Realtor groups often give money – but can they also help with expertise and getting clients housed? Are Realtors aware of the support and opportunities we offer to people who work with the population we served and people on vouchers? It can be a two way street of support. Wouldn’t it be awesome if real estate agents could be allies in our mission to create more stable housing options for everyone?
Here’s the thing: I know navigating the housing market can be tough, even for people who aren’t facing homelessness. So, I’m curious! Have you ever worked with a real estate agent who went the extra mile for someone struggling with housing insecurity? Maybe you are a real estate agent yourself with experience helping clients in similar situations? Or perhaps you’ve just had a fantastic (or frustrating!) experience with an agent on this work? Do you have any advice on how this role can be helpful?
No matter what your story is (or your area), I’d love to hear it! The beauty of real estate is that it touches people’s lives all over the country. So, share your thoughts, experiences, and even success stories. What do you wish real estate agents in your area knew about?
Let’s see if we can build some bridges and create a more inclusive housing market, together.
Here’s to hoping & figuring it out!
